Who was Jack Darling?

James John (Jack) Darling was a World War II veteran, well known businessman and resident of Mississauga.

Jack formed one of the first ratepayers groups in Mississauga (formerly Toronto Township) and became its President in 1956.

Later he served on the Ontario Committee of Adjustment, the Mississauga Centennial Committee and as President of the Mississauga Hockey League.

Jack was the driving force behind the establishment of Sheridan Research Park, a 138 hectare (340 acre) site, devoted entirely to industrial research and development excellence.

Inside the Park

The park is one of about 500 parks administered by the City of Mississauga. It is open year round, although the best times to visit are definitely in the spring, summer, and fall.

As with all parks in Mississauga, there is no fee for admission.

Walking Paths

There are paved winding walking paths that run throughout the park. You will see a lot of people walking and roller blading here, and the walking path also serves as a biking trail. The trail passes by two childrens’ playground areas, and intersects with Ontario’s extensive Waterfront Trail.

The Waterfront Trail is a province-wide initiative that connects over 150 communities and runs for 3600 kilometers along several Great Lakes and the St. Lawrence river.

Playgrounds, Picnic and BBQ Areas

In addition to the walking paths Jack Darling Park has a large amount of open spaces that are perfect for throwing a frisbee, or having a picnic or BBQ. This is a family-oriented park.

Jack Darling Beach

Jack Darling beach is small and sandy, but you will find a lot of people here sunbathing and enjoying the water of Lake Ontario (it’s pretty cold, even on a hot summer day).

Lake Ontario

Jack Darling Memorial Park has a great location right on Lake Ontario. The beach and shoreline have several places where you can launch your kayak, canoe, windsurfing board, or paddle board. Once you are out on the water you are pretty much guaranteed to feel a sense of serenity as you glide across the water.

Leash-free Area for Dogs

Jack Darling Dog Park is a formidable leash-free area for dogs, located near the entrance of the park. It’s a pretty large space, totaling over 22 acres, with a dedicated area for small dogs that is separate from the main area.

The are double-gated entrances to both areas, and even a doggie drinking fountain. Jack Darling Dog Park is renowned for being one of the largest and best leash-free parks in the entire GTA.

It is hugely popular with dogs and dog lovers, and is open year round.

Tennis Courts

The Shoreline Tennis Club operates two tennis courts within the park. The courts have night lighting, and they are open from March 15th until November 30th each year. Playing tennis here requires a membership in the club, although the rates are very reasonable. Season passes are available for adults, children, and there are also family passes offered.

Toboggan Hill

Jack Darling is an all seasons park, and one of its top winter attractions is the toboggan hill. Lots of old fashioned fun for the young, and for the young at heart.

Tallgrass Prairie

One of the most interesting features of Jack Darling Memorial Park is an area called “tallgrass prairie”. Tallgrass prairies used to be much more common in Ontario, but today only about 3% of these prairies remain.

There are only two tall grass prairies remaining in Mississauga, this one and one at Lorne Park Prairie Park. Tallgrass prairies attract bees and butterflies and are home to many animal and insect species that depend on plants that only grow here.

Plan Your Visit

The park is open daily from 7:00am to 11:00pm (or until dusk in winter).

There are several public washrooms at the park.
