What is SHSM?

The Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) is a two-year program that gives high school students in grades 11 & 12 the opportunity to customize and focus their schooling towards a specific career path they may be interested in.

The SHSM is an approved program by the Ontario Ministry of Education, and is available from school boards throughout the province, including Halton, Peel, and the Toronto District School Board. Both the Public and Catholic (separate) school boards participate, as well as French language school boards MonAvenir and Viamonde.

St Joan of Arc SHSM Catholic Secondary School
St Joan of Arc Secondary School offers SHSM in Arts & Culture, Hospitality, and Information & Communications Technology

The SHSM offers students additional opportunities for career-specific training, on-the-job experiences, and industry certifications, at the same time that they are completing the core requirements of the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD).

Example: SHSM in Health and Wellness

Although the framework remains consistent within all SHSM industry sectors, we can review the SHSM in Health and Wellness as an example. Health and Wellness is a popular offering, and is available at the following high schools in Mississauga and Brampton:

The Health and Wellness SHSM is also available the following high schools in Oakville:

See the charts below for all Peel and Halton Region schools.

As with all Specialist High Skills Major curricula, students enrolled in Health and Wellness are able to build a foundation of industry-focused knowledge, literacy, and skills before graduating, thus preparing them for entering apprenticeship training, college, university, or a direct position in the workplace.

Students enrolled in the Health and Wellness SHSM are still required to complete the basic core high school credits: math, science, English, social science, etc. Then on top of the core instruction, there are an additional 4 mandatory courses that must be completed: Cardo-pulmonary Resuscitation, Standard First Aid, Infection Control, plus Workplace Hazardous Materials Information.

Students are then able to choose from a list of elective courses within the Health and Wellness ecosystem, to complete their SHSM. When a Specialist High Skills Major participant graduates from high school, they receive an enhanced diploma that recognizes their additional training.

Specialist High Skills Major FAQs

What does the SHSM cost?

SHSM is available at no cost. Extra components of the program, including certification training, field trips for experiential learning, career exploration, and reach ahead experiences are included. Some additional optional activities may be available for a nominal cost.

What grades do students need in each course to earn an SHSM?

Students need to pass each of the courses in the required bundle of credits.

If a student is already in grade 11, is it too late to apply to an SHSM program?

It still might be possible. Ontario schools do accept students who are entering grade 12 the next year if they have the required pre-requisite courses or are planning to complete these in summer school prior to grade 12.

If a student earns a required certification during the summer, can it count towards their SHSM?

Yes, as long as they can provide documentation that shows the certification.

Can someone participate in Co-op or OYAP without being in an SHSM?

Yes, you do not need to be part of the SHSM to be a part of Co-op or OYAP.

What if a participant changes their mind and doesn’t want to complete the Specialist High Skills Major?

The Specialist High Skills Major program exists to help students identify, explore and refine their career goals, allowing a student to discover what they like doing, and just as importantly, what they don’t like doing. If their interests change, they do not have to continue in the program. All credits earned in the program count towards the completion of a standard Ontario Secondary School Diploma.

Can students return for an additional term and complete their SHSM after they graduate?

Yes, you can complete your SHSM any time after you graduate. Upon completion of the required components, you will receive an official summary sheet showing that you completed the SHSM (but you will not receive the Red Seal on your diploma).

I am a university-bound student who needs specific courses. How can I fit a Co-op course in my timetable?

You have several options. You can take co-op in the summer OR you can take a grade 11 SHSM major course during grade 10. This will leave two credits open for Co-op in grade 12.

How do you register for an SHSM?

See the school guidance counselor or the Specialist High Skills Major lead teacher.

I am in grade 12. I have not taken some of the grade 11 courses specified in the SHSM pathway chart. Can I still get my SHSM designation?

You will not get your SHSM designation until you have completed all the courses in the SHSM pathway chart for both grade 11 and grade 12.

If a student is already an OYAP student, should they also register for an SHSM?

Yes, it is strongly recommended that students register for the SHSM if their school is offering the same sector as the OYAP. Many OYAP requirements will count towards the SHSM as well.

What happens if a student wants to switch to a career in a different employment sector?

They would need to advise their guidance counsellor know that they have changed career goals. If a SHSM program exists related to the new career area, the SHSM can be switched to the new sector. (This may require a transfer to another school.) Some of the certifications and courses may also be used toward the new SHSM.

Can you register to be an SHSM student even if you are not sure that you will complete all the required components?

Yes, if you are interested in a possible career related to a specific industry sector, you can register for that SHSM.

Even if you do not complete all the components of the program, you will still benefit from certification training, field trips and other learning experiences related to the SHSM. You will also receive a summary of all your completed SHSM components when you graduate.

Will earning an SHSM help students to get into university?

At this point, the SHSM program is not a direct qualifying metric for admissions. Nevertheless, the program does provide a definite advantage for students going to university. This can occur when students are competing to obtain summer jobs between terms at university.

The SHSM qualification and associated training and certifications provide a definite advantage to students when applying for summer employment or Co-op placements. These qualifications add to a student’s portfolio when going through job interviews.
