One of the most popular parks in Mississauga is Brueckner Rhododendron Gardens, which is both a park and a botanical garden. Located in the Port Credit area of the city, it draws local residents and visitors from around the world to its beautiful floral displays. The gardens are named after Dr. Joseph Brueckner, an avid horticulturist who donated many hundreds of rhododendron plants to the city for use in the park beginning in the late 1970s.
Dr. Brueckner was a physician who made Mississauga his home after retiring from his medical practice in New Brunswick.
He fell in love with rhododendrons during a stay in Switzerland and put his scientific mind to work breeding hardy varieties of the plant that could survive harsh Canadian winters.
Through hybridization, Brueckner registered some 18 varieties of rhododendrons with the Royal Horticultural Society in London.
Since that time, this Port Credit park has become a popular destination for nature lovers and gardening enthusiasts alike.

The gardens were originally part of a large estate owned by the Harris family, who were prominent landowners in the area.
The land was acquired by the City of Mississauga in 1975, and opened as a park called Cranberry Cove Park in 1982.
It was renamed Rhododendron Gardens in 1990. And then came a final name change to Brueckner Rhododendron Gardens in 2008.

As shown in the map above, the park is located in the Port Credit area of of Mississauga. It’s about a half hour drive from downtown Toronto.

This beautiful botanical garden is located just a few blocks west of the commercial area of Port Credit.
The northern boundary is Lakeshore Road West, the eastern boundary is a narrow road called Godfrey’s Lane, and the southern boundary is Lake Ontario. The western edge is roughly equal to a line slightly west of Shawnmarr Road.
The nearest major intersection is Lakeshore Road W. and Mississauga Road.
Brueckner Rhododendron Gardens is among several parks that line the north shore of Lake Ontario in this part of Mississauga, including Richard’s Memorial Park, Jack Darling Memorial Park, and the Rattray Marsh Conservation Area.
The rhododendron gardens are easily reachable by car, bike, and by public transit. There are plenty of buses along Lakeshore Road W. The nearest commuter rail station is the Port Credit GO Station, from where there is direct service on the Lakeshore West line to Union Station Toronto.
The new Hurontario LRT, when it opens in 2024, will have a stop at the Port Credit GO Station. The new LRT service will provide an enhanced way to travel northwards to the Square One area. and then further to Brampton.

The rhododendron park is one of about 500 parks administered by the City of Mississauga. It is open year round, although the best times to visit are definitely in the spring, summer, and fall.
As with all parks in Mississauga, there is no fee for admission.
Walking Path
There is a paved winding walking path that runs from north to south, that eventually leads to the shores of Lake Ontario. You will see plenty of people walking and roller blading here, and the walking path also serves as a biking trail. This is one of the nicest nature walks in the city.

The walking trail takes you through the open green spaces, through a forested area, and then down to a small pebbly beach.
There are large rocks and driftwood here, with terrific views of Lake Ontario. You will find plenty of wildlife and wildfowl in the area, including ducks, Canada geese, and swans.

There is a medium sized free parking lot when you enter the park off of Lakeshore Road W. On weekends, the lot can get full, but there is additional parking on Shawnmarr Rd. just across Lakeshore Road W.
