Chinguacousy Secondary (Ching SS) was originally founded in 1972, and is noted for its high level of academic achievement.

Today the school is rated as an excellent public high school, and it offers a wide assortment of courses for students. Chinguacousy is pronounced “Ching-coo-see”.

What does Chinguacousy mean?

“Shingwauk” was the name of an indigenous Anishinaabe chief (1773 – 1854) who lived near Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. His name meant “little white pine”. The Ojibwe pronunciation of his name was “Zhingwaakoons“. The name Chinguacousy is a derivative of this name.

Shingwauk was a noted leader and warrior who fought on the side of the British during the War of 1812. He was instrumental in advocating for education for his people, both in English language instruction, and in the preservation of the language and traditions of the Anishinaabe people.

One of the first things to be named after Chinguacousy was the township where present-day Brampton is located. Chinguacousy Township was formed in 1819, and was one of several townships located within what was then called Peel County.

Today, Chinguacousy Township still survives as a geographic township within the Regional Municipality of Peel, Ontario, Canada.

When Peel County became the Region of Peel in 1974, the original township was split in half, with the northern half becoming part of the town of Caledon, and the southern half joining the Town of Brampton, which was then promoted to a city.

Chinguacousy Township originally spanned from what now is Winston Churchill Boulevard to Airport Road, Olde Base Line Road to Steeles Avenue.

You can also find the name Chinguacousy in several places in present-day Brampton, including Chinguacousy Park, Chinguacousy Road, and Chinguacousy Secondary School.
