Frank McKechnie Community Centre first opened on June 24, 2000. It was built on a 17 acre site which at the time was largely untouched woodland forest.
The development was designed to maximize protection of the forest. About 65% of the woodland was preserved through sensitive site selection.
Architects for the development were WGD of Toronto. The building has been designed to meet Mississauga’s standards for sustainability.
Who was Frank McKechnie?
Frank McKechnie (1931-1997) was a long-time Ward 5 councillor for Toronto Township, the Town of Mississauga and the City of Mississauga.
He was born in Glasgow, Scotland and he immigrated to Canada in 1946. McKechnie worked as a tool maker for A.V. Roe in Malton during the Avro Arrow program. In 1958 he entered politics where he served as a local councillor for the Malton area for almost 39 years.
McKechnie oversaw and was involved in many projects that helped to develop Mississauga. He passed away on August 22nd, 1997 while still in office.
Indoor Facilities
Frank McKechnie Community Centre serves both the Hurontario neighbourhood, as well as surrounding areas, and it includes an indoor aquatics centre, a fitness centre, a gymnasium, and a public library.
In addition, there are several multi-purpose rooms, including a large 150 seat auditorium, that are rentable for everything from company meetings to children’s birthday parties.

Although there is no indoor ice arena at Frank McKechnie Community Centre, there are nearby rinks at the Tomken Twin Arena, and the Burnhamthorpe Community Centre.

The Frank McKechnie fitness centre features personal training, cardio and conditioning equipment, an aerobic studio for group exercise classes.

Frank McKechnie Community Centre has several outdoor amenities. There are four tennis courts (unlit) that also have painted lines for pickleball. The nets are at tennis height.
There are also three outdoor basketball nets, as well as a children’s playground complete with splash pad.
The outdoor amenities are free to use, without membership or drop-in fees.

The Frank McKechnie Library is a branch of the Mississauga Library System. It offers full public library services, including an active list of programs. Library hours are different than those of the community centre, so it’s wise to check ahead.
