Burnhamthorpe Community Centre first opened in 1974. It was renovated in 2004, and then was extensively redeveloped and expanded over a three year period from 2021 – 2024.
The latest redevelopment increased the size of the building by 43,000 square feet, and today BCC has approximately 92,000 square feet of recreational amenities.
Architects for the redevelopment were CS&P of Toronto. The building has been designed to meet Mississauga’s new Green Developments Standard for sustainability.
Burnhamthorpe Community Centre is located in a 1970’s classic suburban area of Mississauga, not far from the border with Toronto. It is sandwiched between two parks: Jaycee Park, and Gulleden Park.
Facilities
This facility serves both the Applewood neighbourhood, as well as surrounding areas, and it includes an indoor ice rink, an indoor aquatics centre, a fitness centre, and a gymnasium.
In addition, there are several multi-purpose rooms, including a large 250 seat auditorium, that are rentable for everything from company meetings to children’s birthday parties.
Arena
The ice rink is called the Chic Murray Arena. Charles “Chic” Murray (1914-1984) was a former ward councillor, a deputy Reeve, Reeve and was the 2nd Mayor of the Town of Mississauga. Chic Murray Arena first opened in 1974.
The arena closed while the community centre was being renovated from 2021-2024, but has recently reopened.
It is home to the Applewood Coyotes and the Applewood Hockey Association, and also provides leisure and family skating sessions through its affiliation with the community centre.
The rink is open seasonally each year from late September to mid-March.
Fitness Centre
The Burnhamthorpe Fitness Centre features personal training, cardio and conditioning equipment, an aerobic studio for group exercise classes.

The Burnhamthorpe Community Centre pool was recently renovated.
The indoor swimming pool is a 25 metre, 6 lane rectangular pool. There is also a therapeutic warm water pool beside the main pool.
The therapeutic pool has a depth of 0.90 to 1.8 metres, and features a hydro bench and accessible ramp. The 33°C water is ideal for people in post-rehabilitation or who are looking for a gentle exercise program.

As mentioned above, Burnhamthorpe Community Centre is sandwiched between two city parks: Jaycee Park and Gulleden Park.
Jaycee Park is a charming neighbourhood park that has an award-winning accessible children’s playground.
Gulleden Park is currently undergoing redevelopment, and is expected to reopen in the spring of 2025. There are two existing tennis courts in the park, and next year there will be two additional dedicated pickleball courts as well. For longer distance commuters, highways 401 and 403 are nearby, as is highway 427.
