State schools (also known outside the UK as public schools) generally refer to primary or secondary schools mandated for or offered to all children without charge, funded in whole or in part by taxation. The term may also refer to public institutions of post-secondary education.
The term “public school” has different meanings in different parts of the world.
In North America, a public school is a school supported by public funds, usually taxes.
In the U.K., a public school is a private for-fee secondary School.
In Canada, each province and territory runs its own education system. The schools in these systems are called public schools, and they are free (funded by taxes).
Public schools are available in both English and French in many areas.
