Burlington is a city in Ontario, Canada. It is part of Halton Region in the Greater Toronto Area, and it located at the northwest corner of Lake Ontario. Its size is 186.12 square kilometers.
Burlington traces its founding back to 1792, when John Graves Simcoe, the first lieutenant governor of Upper Canada, named the western end of Lake Ontario “Burlington Bay”.
The first known European resident was Joseph Brant, who settled here with his family in approximately 1802.
Population in the area grew substantially during the 19th and early 20th centuries, and the settlement offically became the Town of Burlington in 1914, and then the City of Burlington in 1974.
Its population was estimated to be 187,000 in 2021.
It remains one of the faster growing communities in Ontario.
Burlington is located 55 km west of downtown Toronto and is reachable via the Queen Elizabeth Way (QEW) Ontario highway.
It is the western terminus for the Lakeshore West GO Train commuter line, provided by GO Transit.
Burlington is situated west of Oakville, and east of Hamilton. Parts of Burlington are on the Niagara Escarpment.
Schools in Burlington are primarily members of the Halton District School Board, and the Halton Catholic District School Board.
