With extensive experience in development, construction, and property management, Amacon is a major player in the real estate industry, and is one of Canada’s largest and most successful builders.
Their portfolio of landmark developments has earned them an excellent reputation within the development sector.
Amacon Developments is a privately held, family-owned company that has been active for many years in Vancouver, Edmonton, Mississauga, and the United States.
Company Background
The company that we know today as Amacon has a very interesting history that is tied to an immigrant family from Italy. When we look back, we can see that the De Cotiis family has had an enormous influence on Canadian real estate development.
What is especially interesting is that their influence has manifested through three separate major development companies.
Amalio De Cotiis
Amalio De Cotiis (1933-2005) was born in Panni, Foggia, Italy. He immigrated to Canada in 1959, along with his parents, three sisters, as well as brothers Marcangelo, Inno, Vito and Michael. The family settled in Vancouver, B.C.
From very humble beginnings, Amalio and his brothers first formed a landcaping company called De Cotiis Landscaping. Eventually, the brothers decided to invest in real estate construction. Their first venture was a modest 19-unit rental apartment in North Vancouver, which was completed in 1964. It was wildly successful.
Viam Holdings
The De Cotiis brothers then formed a development company in 1965 which they named Viam. Viam was an acronym made up of the first letters of the four oldest brothers’ names.
Viam Holdings Ltd. achieved great success during the late 60’s, 70’s, 80’s and early 90’s developing and constructing numerous residential and industrial projects throughout the Greater Vancouver area.
Much later, Viam Holdings became Amacon Developments. The name Amacon is an amalgamation of the first names of Amalio De Cotiis and his wife Concetta.
Amacon extended its business dealings beyond the lower B.C. mainland, and become a major player in the Greater Toronto Area, with a special focus on Mississauga. See below for a full list of projects.
But the De Cotiis family’s influence extends beyond Amacon.
Real Estate Family
One of the five brothers, Inno De Cotiis, created his own real estate development company in 1965 and named it by spelling his own name backwards: Onni. Today The Onni Group is a large corporation with extensive real estate holdings throughout North America.
Michael De Cotiis, who is the youngest of the five brothers, also founded his own company in 1983. It is called Pinnacle International, and it is also a huge player in real estate development across Canada.
At the time of writing, Pinnacle International is constructing what will be Toronto’s tallest building.
I think it is fair to say that the De Cotiis family has had a very large impact on the real estate development industry in Canada.
Mississauga Projects
Amacon first became active in the Mississauga area around 2004. Projects in Mississauga today include:
Capri is a 20 storey condo at 1359 Rathburn Rd E
Eden Park is a 33 storey condo at 3504 Hurontario St
Elle is a 31 storey condo at 3525 Kariya Dr
Eve is a 32 storey condo at 3515 Kariya Dr
Parkside Village
Parkside Village is Amacon’s signature project in Mississauga.
It consists of a 30-acre master-planned, multi-year, multi-tower, mixed-use community in the City Centre of Mississauga. Parkside Village will eventually build out to about 6,000 residential units and will be home to approximately 12,000 people.
The master plan calls for at least 16 highrise towers, as well as a strip of townhouses along its western edge. There are also three acres of dedicated parkland in the mix, as well as landscaped pedestrian streetscapes and healthy offering of commercial space.
Parkside Village is notable as it is a part of Mississauga’s evolution away from a suburban lifestyle with its corresponding set of values, to an urban lifestyle with its own set of values.
As part of that evolution, the City of Mississauga put into place a strategic plan for its downtown core. The city made a commitment to provide a variety of housing, employment and recreation opportunities that will better reflect today’s more urban lifestyles. Amacon offered to advance that strategic goal.
Today, Parkside Village is about two thirds complete.
Amacon’s plan to offer a more urban experience for downtown Mississauga residents seems to have been fairly successful. The area is walkable, and there is plenty of retail in the tower bases. New green spaces have been added to existing parkland, with more to come. And the bonus is that the buildings are all quite handsome as well.
We give Amacon a solid thumbs up so far on this large project.

- 510 Curran Place – PSV2 Condos of Parkside Village
There are currently four more towers under construction, two known as Avia, and two known as Voya, with even more towers planned for the future.

Conclusion
Amacon has created an impressive legacy in Mississauga. Their earlier projects are all excellent, and with Parkside Village, so far at least, they seem to be doing a great job.
Mississauga is slowly urbanizing away from its old suburban roots, and we wish Amacon nothing but success in the completion of Parkside Village, and any other projects they may undertake in the future.
