
Elsie MacGill Secondary School Milton
Elsie MacGill Secondary School is the newest public high school in Milton Ontario. It offers classroom education for grades 9-12, and is a member of the Halton District School Board.

There are currently approximately 1070 students registered at this new facility.
Elsie MacGill Secondary School (EMSS) first opened in September, 2021, with students and staff temporarily located at the former EC Drury High School site. The new Bronte Street South building opened to students and staff in February, 2022, once construction was complete. Official Grand Opening of the new facility was held on May 26, 2022.
During that first year, the school was open only to grade 9 students.
During the 2022-2023 school year, classes were extended to grades 9-10. During 2023-2024 this was expanded to include grades 9-11. In September, 2024 the school began offering the entire secondary school curriculum for grades 9-12.
Who was Elsie MacGill?
Elizabeth (Elsie) Muriel Gregory MacGill (1905-1980) was a pioneering Canadian aeronautical engineer. She was born in Vancouver, B.C. in 1905.
MacGill attended university at UBC in Vancouver, U of T in Toronto, and the University of Michigan in the United States. She completed postgraduate studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
Elsie MacGill became the first woman in the world to earn a master’s degree in aeronautical engineering.
She was also the first practising Canadian woman engineer.
In 1938, she became chief aeronautical engineer of Canadian Car & Foundry (Can Car). There, she headed the Canadian production of Hawker Hurricane fighter aircraft during the Second World War.
Ms. MacGill suffered many challenges in her life, including a bout with polio in 1929.
An active feminist, MacGill was national president of the Canadian Federation of Business and Professional Women’s Clubs (1962–64).
She was also a member of the Royal Commission on the Status of Women in Canada (1967–70).
MacGill died in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1980.

Academically, Elsie MacGill Secondary School already provides a good assortment of specialized courses and programs.
I-STEM
I-STEM is a regional program offered by the Halton District School Board for students in grades 9-12. Students in this four-year program develop innovation skills related to engineering design and design thinking, entrepreneurial thinking skills and global competencies. I-STEM is an acronym for Innovation, Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.

Other high schools in Halton Region offering the I-STEM program include Aldershot High School in Burlington, and TA Blakelock High School in Oakville.
SHSM
Even though it is a brand new school, Elsie MacGill SS already offers 2 different Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) programs: one in Health and Wellness, and one in Energy.
French Language
Although EMSS does not offer a French Immersion program, it does offer classroom instruction in Core French.
ESL
Elsie MacGill SS provides extensive English as a Second Language (ESL) programs led by teachers with substantial experience working with students in ESL.
OYAP
The school is also a participant in the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP) for skilled trades.

As Elsie MacGill Secondary School only opened its doors in 2021, the school’s facilities are still practically brand new. There are plenty of modern classrooms and work spaces for students.
In addition, the school also features numerous drama and art rooms, music areas, a library, a triple gymnasium, a fitness centre, plus athletic fields and computer study areas.

For recreation, Elsie MacGill SS has a triple gymnasium, and a full assortment of track and field facilities.
The school is located in a new area of southwest Milton. There is a fairly large commercial plaza at Louis St. Laurent Ave and Bronte St. S. that features dozens of stores, services, and restaurants. It’s a 3 minute drive, or about an 18 minute walk from the school.

Elsie MacGill Secondary School has a very promising future among high schools in Ontario. It has a great location in southwest Milton, and terrific new facilities.
It has already established a good array of specialty learning programs, athletics, and extra-curricular activities that will enrich students’ academic experience going forward.
