History of the Park
Before there was a Brickyard Park, there was a brickyard.
The site was formerly the location of numerous brick and tile manufacturing operations. Many homes in Mississauga and Toronto were built with bricks manufactured from this location.
What eventually became Canada’s largest brick-making operation began in 1912-1913 when the Ontario National Brick Company purchased a 200-acre farm at the northeast corner of Dundas Street and Mavis Road.
Over the years shale and clay were extracted from the property under a number of different company names, including the Cooksville Shale Brick Company (1922), Cooksville Brick Company Limited (1944), Cooksville Brick and Tile Company (1946), Cooksville La Prairie Brick Company (1953) and DOMTAR (1956). In 1985 Jannock Limited, under the company name of Canada Brick, purchased the site. Operations ceased in 1991.
The name Brickyard honours the legacy of this important industry in Mississauga.
Sports Centre

Brickyard Park has a strong focus on athletics and sporting events. It has professional-grade facilities for baseball, softball, and soccer, including bleachers for people to watch the games. All the fields and ball diamonds are fenced and feature night lighting.
Local amateur sports leagues such as the Erin Mills Men’s Slo-Pitch League (EMMSPL), the Mississauga Men’s Slo-Pitch League (MMSPL) and the RSPA Recreational Coed Slo-Pitch League hold regular games here throughout the warmer months.

The soccer field is also extremely popular, with regular matches played by the Ontario Soccer League, the Ontario Womens Soccer League, the Dixie Soccer Club, the Peel Halton Soccer Association, and the Toronto Premier League.
Brickyard Park is extremely popular during the summer. The last few times that I visited, there were softball, baseball, and soccer games going on simultaneously in the early evening.

The children’s play area also seems to be very popular. Plenty of kids playing in the playgrounds, and in the splash pad area.
During winter it’s a much quieter place, but you will still see people walking, hiking, and walking their dogs.
The park is clean and well maintained, although, unusual for a park in Mississauga, there are only a few trees that provide shade.

Part of the urban fabric that many of us crave is participation in individual or team sports. Whether it’s men’s or women’s slo-pitch softball, baseball, or soccer, parks like Brickyard play an important role.

Artwork in the Park
You will also find some interesting public art at the entrance to the park – a beautiful stone relief sculpture of an eagle by Angelo Belluz (1924-2014). Mr. Belluz was a highly talented local artist and master stone cutter, who happened to work at the brickyard. Over the years his legacy came to be seen in many buildings, parks, and homes across Mississauga and Canada. One of his significant works is his Bread and Honey Festival bas relief statue in Streetsville Memorial Park.
