Specialized Courses
Academically, HLSS has a decent list of specialized courses and programs for students.
Dual Credit Program
Dual Credit programs provide grade 11 and 12 students with an opportunity to earn both college and non-compulsory secondary credits at the same time.
College credits earned may be applied to a college program after high school.
Students can choose from more than 50 courses at colleges such as Centennial, George Brown, Humber, Seneca and Sheridan.
SHSM
Once students reach Grade 11, they can also participate in two separate Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) programs: one for Arts and Culture, and one for Information and Communications Technology.

HLSS does not offer French Immersion classroom instruction, but it does offer classes in basic Core French.
ESL
Heart Lake SS provides extensive English as a Second Language (ESL) programs led by teachers with substantial experience working with students in ESL.

Heart Lake Secondary School has had numerous expansions and upgrades over the years, and parents can be confident that today, even though this is an older school, HLSS provides a good assortment of modern classrooms and work spaces for students.
In addition, the school also features numerous drama and art rooms, music areas, video editing facilities, a library, an auto workshop, three large gymnasiums, a cardio fitness centre with weight room, plus athletic fields and computer study areas.

Heart Lake Conservation Area
The Heart Lake Conservation Area is a large park run by the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority. It features everything from splash pads to picnic areas and boat rentals. This is the only place in the GTA that I am aware of where you can zip line across a lake.
Jim Archdekin Recreation Centre
The Jim Archdekin Recreation Centre is located next door to Heart Lake Secondary School. It features a swimming pool, ice rink, squash courts, an auditorium, outdoor skate park, tennis courts, baseball diamonds, and a soccer field.

Heart Lake boundaries cover a fairly large catchment area of north Brampton, extending from Bovaird Drive W. in the south, to Mayfield Road in the north, with McLaughlin Road on its western edge. and Highway 410 marking its eastern boundary.
